I started my own private practice this year and these videos are SO helpful! Love how you take the math of it all and break it down to make it more accessible to those of us still learning the numbers and business side of things. Appreciate you!
Thank you two. I really enjoyed this podcast; shared on Facebook.
I find it hard with IFS therapy to narrow it down. I offer intuitive drawing along with the IFS work so that does make me different but regarding an actual niche, I do love it when clients bring different issues to resolve. It is always a new challenge and gaining experience and when we apply IFS to it the magic happens. Im curious what your niching views are for IFS therapists.
This gives me a ton of hope that I could be self-employed someday. Thanks!
What if I make a million thousand a year
Chat gpt , copy paste 😂

HI there, Just tried to download the guide you mentioned, but the page isn't there anymore. Need to possibly address this. Thanks anyway.
Hi there… It’s perhaps fair to say that Mentaya takes a burden off the backs of therapists. I do not know; I am not a therapist. I am a patient, and warn that my experience and the experience of other peers who have used them have experienced more stress, anxiety, and panic than it’s worth. Mentaya’s team did not handle any of my many claims correctly. Their customer dashboard technology is flawed and displayed incorrect information on the status of my claims throughout their processing time period. Their chief of staff, Rachel, agrees. The customer service team were slow, poor communicators. On the advice of my insurance company, having seen the sloppy claim submissions themselves, I stopped using Mentaya and rescinded my authorization for them to handle my account. They ignored that, and continued to process sloppy claims. As I rectified the matter on my own and directly with the insurance company, got the claims approved and paid out, Mentaya’s team continued to access my insurance account and voided the approved claims! The reimbursements I received became debt I now owed to the insurance company. I spent dozens of hours trying to fix the situation, including directly with Christine who offered to waive some future fees to help. Please forgive me, but there is no $20 fee I would forgo to risk the utter chaos that ensued after letting this company near my account. For a service intended to help people seeking to heal mental illness and experience a bit more ease in their lives, this product is not the solution and it feels like malpractice to endorse it. This experience damaged my relationship with my therapist and I do not want to have this happen to others. 😞
Eradicate therapy poverty. I love that! Thanks for all your advice John.
How do you do with insurance through? They more likely will not pay 135 a session
I like people who give numbers and get straight to the point without saying "Watch to the end." Subscribing.
Wondering if you feel IFS therapists need to niche as much. I do IFS and intuitive drawing but I enjoy a range of clients not one narrow type. Have your views changed more recently?
What are the courses or certification one can do if I do not have a background in psychology or counseling
In order to start a private practice . Is it necessary to pursue a phd before starting ? Or is masters enough ?
I'm one year into pp. I haven't had any private pay clients come my way. I'm sure there are many variables for this. For now, Im accepting insurance which allows me to make the same as I would at a clinic but working less.
My issues with this is that it's not so simple. You may have a rate you charge, but insurance will surely not pay out that full rate. So how do you account for that?
Whats the best template???
Appreciate this video! Helped alot in understanding
This is awesome
I am not worried about paid time off when I can potentially over triple my income by having a private practice.
I’m 3 months out of graduate school with my LMSW and I’m on track to make $115k my first year. Most of my classmates are making a $70k salary. Hard work, putting in the hours. The opportunities are there, just work your ass off.
How does one make this kind of money, while still able to help those who need our services most. If you are focussed on the number, are you not in danger of pricing out those who need our services but have modest means?
Really appreciate your insight! Needed to niche years ago, have somehow deferred, but going to ASAP. Excellent information!!
So, I start my grad program next semester and still have a ways to go. But in the meantime I'm wondering what all you need to do if you want to go private practice. Do you have to accumulate lots of marketing strategies, find an office building to purchase, create a website, business cards, or any other things I should be prepared to do?
This needs time stamps, when does he get to the topic?
That’s a great point saying that it’s not our responsibility to manage our clients wallets. I think the temptation for many business owners is to make prices based on what they can personally afford. Overcoming that barrier makes room for success.
Yessss!! I see therapist talk so much about themselves! Clients want to know how we are gong to help them!
This was great thank you!
What did you make per year from the group practice and how many therapists were in your GP?
I left a 6 figure executive director role to go into private practice for the exact reason you mentioned, it is not job security, it’s selling your life and sanity off to make someone else’s business work. You have no control.
How’s it going now? I’m just curious because I am leaving my construction career to pursue counseling
This sounds good on paper, but realisticly, Im in my second year of counselling, the most client I had in a week was 10...and it fluctuates from 0 clients to 10...I wish it was as easy as you portray it

YOU ARE FREAKING AWESOME! THANK YOU VERY MUCH! 🌹 #INSTANTSUB
Business is misspelled on the slide. Always, always, ALWAYS have someone else proofread your work before you share it in a presentation.
You only care about money

I am not sensing any SUDS changes, even with One Eye when I move my eye. At 12' I have hard time to believe the interviewer would attune so quickly, from SUDS 3 to 6 on the other side. What could be a remedy.
What an incredible guest, this episode was such a gift!
Thank you so much!!!
Thank you for this informed video. :) i am transitioning into group practice and this gives me a lot to think about. Appreciate the realness of group practice in the video
Thank you for the formula!! And your time making the video!
How can i reach your office?
How can i hire your services?
This was great! Thank you
Everything discussed is spot on, but the talk about other therapies hits the nail on the head. I'm 58, and I've been in Gestalt therapy, CBT and Schema therapy, and all of those therapists wanted me to think different thoughts and have different beliefs. But I felt at my core (Self) that wasn't right. Therapists seemed to do the exact same thing my parents did: telling me I wasn't okay the way I was and that I should be different. The therapists didn't shame me like my parents did, but they didn't listen to me either or allowed/encouraged me to have the thoughts I had. I recently found IFS, and it all just clicks intuitively. And I can do this on my own. I find it very difficult to trust people (especially authority figures), and somehow, therapists always think they are very trustworthy, which is kind of odd, I think - given the history of many of their clients. So, this saves me months of testing out the therapist and fighting my social anxiety. Thank you for sharing this interview. Derek was the best therapist. I am so grateful for his legacy. Rest In Peace, Derek.
Ok, so WHY all the sites out there and so many RUclipsrs keep saying "being a counselor/psychologist is amazing, but get ready to make very little money. Starting salary for counselors will be between 40 to 45k..." I don't understand where they are getting this information from because every time I make a search on Indeed and Google jobs the salaries are far higher than 45k. Why they keep preaching this non-sense? I almost got discouraged from pursuing my master's in clinical psych because everyone keep talking about these VERY low salaries. After finding your channel I enrolled at the MS in clinical psych and will start in August this year. Thank you for all the amazing videos.
Wow! Therapists telling clients essentially it’s not okay that they’re gay (or that they don’t work with them, etc.) - mind blown! I appreciate that you put that you’re affirmative on your site, John and love that your guest changed her practice to be fully affirmative. Right on 🙏. As a gay therapist, I’m grateful.
Can I have two private practices/two separate businesses? I want to have two separate business one that takes insurance and a completely separate business that is cash only.
This is very helpful
FYI: You say conservative twice at 2:25 and I think you meant to say conservative and then aggressive (or the like).
Amazing helpful information. I am going back to school this Spring to get my LMHC and am so glad I found your page/resources. Thanks for sharing.
