I left a 6 figure executive director role to go into private practice for the exact reason you mentioned, it is not job security, it’s selling your life and sanity off to make someone else’s business work. You have no control.

This sounds good on paper, but realisticly, Im in my second year of counselling, the most client I had in a week was 10...and it fluctuates from 0 clients to 10...I wish it was as easy as you portray it

I am not sensing any SUDS changes, even with One Eye when I move my eye. At 12' I have hard time to believe the interviewer would attune so quickly, from SUDS 3 to 6 on the other side. What could be a remedy.

Everything discussed is spot on, but the talk about other therapies hits the nail on the head. I'm 58, and I've been in Gestalt therapy, CBT and Schema therapy, and all of those therapists wanted me to think different thoughts and have different beliefs. But I felt at my core (Self) that wasn't right. Therapists seemed to do the exact same thing my parents did: telling me I wasn't okay the way I was and that I should be different. The therapists didn't shame me like my parents did, but they didn't listen to me either or allowed/encouraged me to have the thoughts I had. I recently found IFS, and it all just clicks intuitively. And I can do this on my own. I find it very difficult to trust people (especially authority figures), and somehow, therapists always think they are very trustworthy, which is kind of odd, I think - given the history of many of their clients. So, this saves me months of testing out the therapist and fighting my social anxiety. Thank you for sharing this interview. Derek was the best therapist. I am so grateful for his legacy. Rest In Peace, Derek.

Ok, so WHY all the sites out there and so many RUclipsrs keep saying "being a counselor/psychologist is amazing, but get ready to make very little money. Starting salary for counselors will be between 40 to 45k..." I don't understand where they are getting this information from because every time I make a search on Indeed and Google jobs the salaries are far higher than 45k. Why they keep preaching this non-sense? I almost got discouraged from pursuing my master's in clinical psych because everyone keep talking about these VERY low salaries. After finding your channel I enrolled at the MS in clinical psych and will start in August this year. Thank you for all the amazing videos.

Wow! Therapists telling clients essentially it’s not okay that they’re gay (or that they don’t work with them, etc.) - mind blown! I appreciate that you put that you’re affirmative on your site, John and love that your guest changed her practice to be fully affirmative. Right on 🙏. As a gay therapist, I’m grateful.

This explains why when looking for a therapist, I'm seeing that most are charging crazy amounts like $280 per session. I mean - how many of the people who need your assistance can actually afford those kinds of fees? When did a 'helping' profession become so mercenary?

That's for cash pay. If you need to take insurance because you're not getting patients who can afford over $100 a session, lower your annual salary expectations. You'll be paying a company to file claims for you.

Not sure if this is still an active channel or not (lazy and not looking as it’s late BUT I did subscribe) but this is good info. I’m currently about 6 months from graduating with a Bachelor’s in Human Services and basically have a job waiting on me as a QMHP once I graduate and get my QMHP-T license through my state. I’ll start at close to 50K a year in a salaried position and while I’m building experience there - I’ll be enrolling to complete my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health. From there, my hope is that I can get my hours in while either maintaining said QMHP or hopping over somewhere else. Eventually, when I’m a LPC (hopefully within 5 or 6 years of today maximum) I’m gonna spend a few years working for a local agency or non profit until I’m ready to take the dive into private practice. I’d love to have my own private practice or at least be doing tele health on the side within the next decade and ride off into the sunset. ***Not that it matters but I’m actually taking a loss financially doing this but it’s something I want to do and feel like I’d be a great asset to the field. If I can make it to becoming a LPC it should be a financial gain. Thanks for the info!

Thank you so much for this John! One question: How many client cancellations should we account for having over the course of the year? Is it roughly equal to three weeks' worth of sessions? Four? Just wondering if you feel we should be accounting for this in our calculations. Thank you!

Thanks for this, mate! I'm working towards my LPC right now, and doing coaching on the side to fund my way through school. I launched a private coaching practice on the first of the year, and it has been a learning experience, to say the least! By jumping in feet-first, I've had to learn so many topics I was previously completely ignorant of (sales, marketing, etc...). Right now I'm trying to nail down my value proposition to speed up client acquisition a bit. Super useful video so far! (I understand there is a bit of animosity from licensed people towards coaches - I refer clients to local therapists and counselors when their issues are outside of the scope of coaching - so please don't slaughter me!)
